4 Self-Care Tips to Help During Quarantine

1) Stay Busy - Staying busy helps you not build bad habits during these times of self-quarantine. Being home all day can mean you’re surrounded by temptations. Things like the TV, Snacks & white wine are now only an arms length away. And while it may seem tempting to reach for some temporary comfort, try your hardest not too. The last thing you will want coming out of quarantine is to have added a bunch of unwanted weight and alcohol withdrawals. Instead, allow yourself one or two nights a week to let loose. Fill the rest of your spare time doing something constructive. Which takes us to our next point…

2) Exercise - Social media has definitely started to bring to light some of the amazing workouts you can do from the comfort of your home. You don’t need any fancy equipment, in most cases just the floor will do. The benefits of exercising for just 30 minutes a day go way beyond just helping you look good. During these times of being locked down in your house, you will be more sedentary than you most likely ever will be. This will have a direct impact on your physical AND mental health. Exercising helps release feel good hormones. These feel good hormones are responsible for our motivation, appetite, sleep & libido. By not releasing them each day, we risk negatively effecting the things which keep us going.

3) Learn a New Skill - Close your eyes and think about something you have wanted to do in the past 365 days that you weren’t able to do because life seemed to be in the way. Perhaps you wanted to learn photography, or maybe you wanted to learn a new yoga move… Whatever it was, take this time in isolation to accomplish that skill. For me, meditating is something I’ve tried to do on and off for the past year. However, I would never allow myself enough time to do it before rushing off to work. Now I’m at home all day, I have started to do 10 minutes every morning, and I’m already feeling calmer and more grounded.

4) TLC - Finally, its time for some TLC. There’s no better way to reward yourself than taking some time to relax with the things you love. Put on a face mask, order some take out and have an evening where you put your feet up with a glass of your favourite beverage (but remember try to enjoy alcohol once or twice a week!). If you live with your significant other or someone else, take this time to switch off together. Dim the lights, fill up the diffuser and turn on your favourite show. The goal here is to enjoy the little things in life that make you happy. We are living in very uncertain times where finding time to show gratitude can be difficult. However, by pampering yourself from time to time, you are still sending the signals to your brain that “hey, it could be worse’. This TLC time will go a long way towards keeping you sane during this quarantine.
